Why Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Porcelain crowns are often required when a tooth has been severely weakened and is no longer structurally sound. This can occur as a result of:

Our dentist can assess the condition of your teeth and determine the best solution for your needs, whether that’s porcelain crowns or porcelain dental veneers. We pride ourselves on our personalised approach to dental care that ensures you receive the tailored treatments you need.

What Are Crowns & Bridges Made From?

Crowns and bridges can be used on natural teeth and dental implants, and are made in our laboratory by our experienced dental technician using materials such as gold, metal alloys and porcelain. Aside from these materials, a more modern tooth-coloured material called zirconia can also be used to make dental crowns. Generally, porcelain can last for more than 15 years and is one of the longest lasting solutions to rebuilding a tooth. The material also doesn’t stain or change colour, making is suitable for porcelain crowns and bridges as well as porcelain teeth veneers.

The Tooth Crown Process

At least 2 appointments are required for preparation and fitting in a porcelain crown dental procedure. The process involves:

  • During the first appointment, our dentist will take an impression of your lower and upper teeth. We will fill the jaw-shaped tray with a soft, gel-like material, which is then pushed onto your teeth and held in for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • The dentist will apply local Anaesthetic and the tooth is shaped and made smaller. Following this, we take another impression of your teeth and send it to the dental lab to make a permanent crown as per the specifications. In the meantime, we place a temporary crown to protect the shaped tooth.
  • During the second appointment, we remove the temporary crown and place the permanent crown on the shaped tooth. After examining the colour match and shape, we will cement the crown to the tooth.
  • Finally, we will test if you are comfortable with your bite, and make adjustments if required.
